Few days ago I have been playing on wordpress upgrades via fantastico. Fantastico is just another script that allows you to install, upgrade, remove other scripts(wordpress, phpbb, drupal etc..) with one click.

I was wondering what could happen to my blog if I would just press on “upgrade button” will fantastico know how to shut off plugins?

Would fantastico know how to remove certain folders?

Simple answer to that is NO.

While testing, I had to manually remove all the folders that weren’t needed, and I had to deactivate all the plugins as well.

Why am I writing today about upgrading wp via fantastico?

Majority of webhosting providers have fantastico and bloggers use them all the time because its easy to install upgrade and remove all of that with 1 simple click.

There was over 22.000 bloggers that had an sql error when upgrading to 2.3 via fantastico and I wanted to share some experiments, so people don’t encounter any problems in the feature.

Procedures you should take before upgrading:

  • Backup your entire wordpress files and folders
  • Backup your sql
  • Login to Admin console - deactivate ALL plugins
  • If you want to be nice= redirect all visitors to your custom page “Site under construction” etc..
  • Read the instructions on Wordpress

Once you backup everything and deactivated all your plugins , go ahead and click on upgrade button on your fantastico. Click on the image to enlarge.

fantastico upgrade wordpress

When you are done upgrading, go ahead navigate to your website, check if everything is ok.

Check your plugins and make sure to update all of them that needed to be updated.

Thanks for this warning and the instructions. I have upgraded via Fantastico in the past without problems and probably would have done so again this time! I always back up my database first but did not think of disabling the plugins.

[...] 2. Upgrade via fantastico. I considered upgrading my site via fantastico hoping the upgrade will be as easy as installing a wordpress blog. Unfortunately, I was neither able to upgrade using fantastico because upgrade to wordpress 2.5 and 2.5.1 is not yet available due to “bug fixing and testing”, according to my hosting provider. Nevertheless, here is a good tutorial on How To Upgrade Wordpress 2.3.x+ Via Fantastico. [...]
