Today I got an email from Collin De Ruyck regarding an issue with his xml sitemap generator for wordpress and Top Commentator.
Question:
I have a problem with my XML sitemap generator. When I activate it this is what
I get for messages:
There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is
writable. Learn more
There was a problem writing your zipped sitemap file. Make sure the file exists
and is writable. Learn more
The building process took about 0 seconds to complete.
If you changed something on your server or blog, you should rebuild the sitemap
manually.Sp as you can see it is not working right. Any tips on how to get it working. I
also want a top commentator plugin that is going to work. Do you know of one
that I can use?
Answer:
Collin about your XML sitemap generator this all depends on your version of wordpress my suggestion is to start all over. Go to your plugins disable the sitemap generator plugin, after that go to your FTP find /plugins/sitemap-generator/ delete that folder(plugin). I would suggest to download the newest version of Google Sitemap Generator or Try this one should be same. Simply download the zip file unzip it on your personal computer, upload the folder structure “sitemap-generator” to your /plugins directory after you are done. Login to your Admin screen /plugins and activate the plugin. Go to your Options click on Google XML Sitemaps click on “If you changed something on your server or blog, you should rebuild the sitemap manually”. That should build your xml sitemap. If you are getting still same error as above. Go to your FTP in the /root directory you will see sitemaps.xml file right click on that file and find either Chmod command or something that will change your file permissions from let say 644 to 777, that is what you want it to be 777.
About the Top Commentators I got my plugin from Webgrrrl.net and works also with 2.3.x wordpress. The installation instructions are also on the same page.

Update: MG also commented that he found other sitemap xml plugin which works for him, he found the plugin at http://www.dagondesign.com/articles/sitemap-generator-plugin-for-wordpress/
So Collin you might want to delete the plugin I told you about and try this one instead.

I think quite a few Wordpress users had problems with the sitemap generator when they upgraded to WP 2.3, and the only solution was, as you suggest, updating the sitemap plugin
I have updated the plugin and it still says the same thing. The top com. plug in works great so feel free in stopping by a leaving a comment.
I too, had a problem with my XML sitemap when I updated Wordpress. You can gain in pagerank if you have it.
I downloaded different plugin on wordpress site, and it works now. It’s more easy to install it than XML .
@MG: can you provide url of that plugin I will make sure you get credited in this post
