You make some good points. Other advantages to blogs is google seems to like them better and its easier to manage link exchanges and comments help facilitate discussion. The biggest advantage is most blogs have premade templates so you don't need to design your own.

Blogs are good for SEO. Their link structure is very organised and that's what Google likes. Sure there are some problems such as duplicate content but it's easily fixed with a robots.txt edit.

Definitely a blog today is almost required. Just for the easy quick posting you can do as well as SE benefits.

But I think the front page should still be a website with standard pages of information. With a nice link to your blog and recent posts for visitors and the search engines.

A blog is also something that you can use to interact and engage with your visitors, creating a rapport with your customers is always a great way to increase the goodwill of your business.

I think a blog is a great value addition to a static site, it can be something that will keep people coming back to the site.
